Be Mine

Lena lived in Ostvesk without knowing it had a hotel, and it was a nice one as well. Not grand like Hotel Imsk with restaurants, bars, and a performing stage, but it was clean and well maintained. Also, it had hot water and electricity.

She got out of the shower, which was a tub with a curtain, combed her wet hair in the mirror, brushed her teeth, and came out into her room and found Misha where he’d been when she went into the washroom an hour ago—by the door, standing with his back against it.

The room wasn’t big but had beige wallpaper that made it appear spacious, a curtain with leopard print for some reason and a matching bed cover, a single large bed with crisp clean linen, and a vanity (the bench in front of it had a leopard print cushion), and a painting of a silver birch forest hung on the wall at the head of the bed. The carpet was faded green, two shades lighter than Misha’s uniform, and swept well as Lena walked on it barefoot.

Grey gaze followed her around the room as Lena walked with a towel wrapped around her and bent by her suitcase to pull out her pajamas. Did she need pajamas at the front? Nope. It’d been one of the things she’d taken because it was ‘hers’.

The plan was to undress in front of him and change, but his unease affected her and now she felt awkward. So she left them folded on the bed and sat down still in her towel.

“What time are we leaving tomorrow?” She braided her damp hair. It would have nice curls in the morning if she let it dry that way.

“You come whenever. I’ll wait for you,” he said. He got Lena a leave for the night from her commander so she could take her shower, but now stood there by the door as though he’d turned into a statue.

“You didn’t want to sit?” she asked, gesturing at the leopard bench by the vanity. He’d paid for the room and the bottle of Sakartvelo wine she’d insisted on having. The vineyards had all burned during the drakon war and Sakartvelo was just beginning to produce wine again.

“I should go,” he said. “Here, just in case. There are some drunks around here.” Unholstering his pistol, he set it on the vanity.

He’d waited for her for an hour just to tell her he was leaving. Lena had forgotten how terrible he was at it. He was very clear about some things, like his orders on the field, but about other things, he couldn’t get his shit together.

Three years was how long it had taken them to kiss for the first time and it came about only because Polina stole morphine and got her rank degraded. Even then, it was Lena who had to push him because he just kept growling at her and kicking her out of his office, though he’d liked her the entire time.

Since then,
